You don’t have to look very far to notice the devastating effects this has had on the community of believers. Stop and think for a second: How vital is food and drink to your physical health? What if you went weeks, months, or even years without eating or drinking consistently? You would become weaker and weaker until eventually you would die. A sobering thought. Well, I think you know where I’m going with this. What food and drink are to the physical body is what the Word of God is to the spiritual life.
A believer cannot grow if they do not study the Bible consistently. Now, the study of the Word of God is one of many vital steps in the growth of a believer, but it isn’t the only one. Still, we must start there. Before we can obey the will of God, we must desire to know the will of God. The Apostle Paul told Timothy that “All Scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:16–17). And that was written at a time when the Bible was not in a complete state as it is today! So how much more is that true in the life of the present believer?
Whether you are just getting started or have been walking with Christ for many years, God desires to speak to you through His Word. Jesus Himself said, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.” The Word of God is not optional nourishment—it is essential for life.
And when we study the Scriptures consistently, something supernatural happens:
- Our minds are renewed.
- Our desires are reshaped.
- Our discernment sharpens.
- Our faith strengthens.
- Our love for Christ deepens.
